Today I removed some dead eggs from the green tray and tested the water.
The ones that have died look white as you can see in this picture. We have 9 eggs that didn't hatch and died, Mr Robinson said that's not too bad.
Dead white eggs |
I used the testing kit to find out how much ammonia is in the water. When the eggs hatch they release nitrate into the water which the baby alevin don't like so this is one of the main things we need to keep an eye on. The test measured 0.5 which isn't bad. If it gets too high I will need to replace about half of the water to dilute the amount of ammonia.
Lots of life in the tank now! |

We were excited to come to school this morning and find we had one wee alevin, one of our eggs had hatched! By the time we left school there were at least 7. We will keep posting new video and photos on here over the holidays to keep you all up to date.
A close up view of life inside the salmon eggs.
